Last Saturday, 25th of November, our new warehouse was officially opened in Moerdijk. We have celebrated the official opening of our fourth location, which will also be designated as our headquarters.

Erik Janse (Business Development director), Ewoud van Elderen (Director), Reinier van Elderen (Founder) and Derk van Mackelenbergh (Nekovri – Dutch Association for Cold Storage and Cold Storage).

With the opening of the new location, we paid attention to the growth as a logistics service provider that can offer the complete refrigerator and freezer plate down to -25 degrees Celsius in refrigerated, frozen and ambient goods. In Moerdijk we have our own quay of 300 meters with a draft of 9 meters, which means that products supplied by ship to our place can be transported further inland –  from the Moerdijk location via truck or rail connection. In addition, we offer value-added services to our customers if required: repacking, labeling, packing, order picking, inspecting etc.

Also, a Border Inspection Point (BIP) has been created in the new building. It means that all products can be inspected here and customs formalities can be arranged for our customers, as necessary documents, KCB inspections and permits. The next step we are in discussion about is to arrange the NVWA office here: “The ball is in the NVWA’s court” – Ewoud van Elderen. There are two spacious temperature-controlled inspection rooms available in the BIP, three docks, a freezing and cooling quarantine cells.

The Moerdijk branch has 47,000 mobile pallet spaces, 90% of which, at this stage, are frozen and the remaining 10% are cool or ambient.

The intention is to handle more and more fruit and vegetable products, which can be both organic and conventional. Also important is that Frigo has SKAL certification: “The new building is multifunctional and everything is ready to be able to switch quickly to offer services for the fruit and vegetable sector such as packing and repacking, cross-docking, labeling, order picking, inspecting fruit via third parties, etc. The company is prepared to invest in the machines to achieve this in consultation with (potential) customers.”

In order to provide more (fruit and vegetable) services, we created a mezzanine floor of 4,500 m2, suitable for around 5,000 pallets at a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius. The construction of the mezzanine floor is designed in such a way that it can handle as much weight (3.5 tons per m2) as the subfloor and pallets up to 3 high can be placed on the floor. To get pallets to the floor, 4 lifts have been installed, each with a lifting capacity of 5 tons. The dispatch area from 0 to 5 degrees is equipped with a double-shell airlock, which means that there is an aisle between the docks and the internal roller doors of the conditioned space. This minimizes the temperature loss between outside and inside.

“A building has been constructed that ensures that the link is complete and the company is ready for the future. Still on the wish list, it is a big wish of us, actually, – to realize a wind turbine. This could make the company completely ‘green’.” A first step has been taken with solar panels, which can cover 30% of the total energy requirement. The residual heat is used to heat the building where necessary. In order to realize the remaining 70% and become energy-neutral, we have to wait for permission from the municipality of Moerdijk. In practice, this turns out to be a difficult hurdle, but we are not giving up and are working towards it!
